Product Information

A superb gift idea for any lover of bold spring colour, this metal Tulip Trough will make a real impression and contains everything needed to grow a spectacular display of tulips on the patio, balcony or even on top of a wall. The rope handles and brushed white finish give a lovely rustic feel that looks wonderful in any style of garden.

Two tulip varieties are included, chosen to give the most sumptuous colour combination of vibrant orange with dark and dramatic maroon and they work beautifully together. They are Triumph tulips, a cross between two exceptional and successful varieties, Single Early and Darwin, resulting in exceptionally robust tulips with large, cup shaped flowers.

Plant the tulips in autumn, and as late as November, and they’ll bring a spectacular splash of colour to the garden in April and May. As the planter is reusable, once the tulips have finished flowering they can be replaced with summer planting, such as bedding or herbs.

Supplied as a metal planter with compost and 7 tulip bulbs, size 11/12, growing to a height of 40 cm (16 in) including:

  • 3 x Tulip ‘Jimmy’ – An absolutely beautiful, scented tulip with rich orange petals flushed with coral pink.
  • 4 x Tulip ‘Ronaldo’ – Incredibly deep maroon flowers, the colour or delicious red wine.

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Tulip Bulbs

  • Plant bulbs at twice the depth of the height of the bulb and four times their width apart. e.g. 5cm tall bulbs need to be planted 10cm below the surface of the ground and 20cm apart.
  • Please check the bag for any additional planting instructions.
  • They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they’ll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.
  • Leave them in the ground once they die back for flowers again next year.
  • While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.

Aftercare Advice

  • Tulips can be planted as late as November, but it’s best to get your bulbs in the ground so that they can establish a good root system before the weather becomes too cold.
  • Plant in herbaceous borders, in pots, or leave in the ground to naturalise.
  • Water frequently and ensure pots don't dry out.

Tidying your Tulips

  • Once flowering is over, it is important to leave the leaves on your tulips until they have died right down, usually by early summer. This allows the bulb to store food and produce flowers the following year.
  • While it is recommended that bulbs are dug up and dried in the summer sun, modern thought is that there is no real benefit from doing this and many gardeners now leave bulbs where they are.
