They may look delicate and beautiful, but ornamental grasses are incredibly hardy and easy to care for. This makes them a popular choice for gardeners of all experience levels. Many varieties are resistant to the cold, drought and pests, with some growing well in shady spots, although most prefer being planted in well-drained, sunny areas.
Compact varieties, such as the aptly-named Tiny Pampa are great for adding year-round structure to pots, containers and borders. Some require larger footprints, such as the Elephant Grass, though they're equally as impressive while being easy to plant and and care for.
For most ornamental grasses, occasional water in dry spells of weather and an annual pruning is the only care they need. Flowering, deciduous varieties bloom well into autumn, so simply cut them back in late winter ready for fresh growth in springtime. You can also apply a slow-release fertiliser to keep them looking their best. Evergreen types of grasses only need a light pruning to keep them tidy.
When selecting your ornamental grasses, be sure to choose a variety that's suitable for your planting space. For example, not all grasses will grow well in shady spots. If you want to start your grass in a pot or container, be sure to choose a compact variety.
From here, your choice depends on your creativity and the effect you want to create in your garden. Whether you want to attract wildlife with flowering, flowing high grasses, or add colour, texture and form to a border, we have ornamental grasses for sale to suit your landscape.
