Choosing the Right Currant Plants for Your Garden

Currants come in a few key types, each with its own strengths. Red currant bushes produce bright, translucent berries with a sharp, refreshing flavour, ideal for desserts, jellies and summer puddings. Black currant plants are deeper in flavour and colour, perfect for cooking, freezing and preserving. Some gardeners refer to larger forms as black currant trees or red currant trees, but these are usually bush-trained plants rather than true trees. Currants grow well in sun or light shade and prefer fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. They are excellent for mixed fruit gardens, kitchen plots or containers, especially where space is limited. Most varieties are self-fertile, so a single plant will still crop well, though planting more than one can increase yields.

Planting and Caring for Currant Bushes
