Product Information

There is something so special and iconic about English Shrub Roses.

This is an old-fashioned type of rose with an intricate and full centre of heavenly yellow petals that flow around one-another to form the most remarkable patterns. Many years of breeding has made this variety so much easier to grow in any garden, big or small, either in larger pots or in borders and beds.

This variety has been bred to have a good fragrance, and superb disease resistance, which is not always seen with roses, but our growers have managed it! Best of all it is a repeat flowerer and will bloom for up to five months of the year with little deadheading - although you may wish to keep them tidy.

The English Shrub Rose is a little more vigorous and less formal than Hybrid Tea alternatives, so can be combined with other shrubs to create superb border displays.

Supplied as one bare root plant, trimmed back to 30-35cm, dormant without leaves, ready to be planted immediately.

What Is Supplied

Item 530270 supplied as:
1 x Bare Root
  • The amount of growth on potted roses will vary at different times of year, depending on when they are potted.
  • Potted roses will be freshly potted from November to February, so are not fully rooted through.
  • They will have new shoots beginning in March and April.
  • They will be in leaf and then buds May and June.
  • They will be in flower June and July.
  • From August onwards they may be trimmed back, ready to plant and burst back into life the next season.
  • From the end of September your rose has received its trim which will help it to have stronger roots and better form next year.

Top Tips

  • When pruning, make sure that your secateurs are clean and sharp to prevent squashing stems and introducing disease.
  • Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help the plant establish quicker.

Care Information

  • Roses tolerate wide range of soils but thrive in deep, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, so add plenty of well-rotted manure into the hole if necessary and plant so that the graft union (the swollen area when the stems meet the roots) is around 3cm below soil level. Water well every other day - daily if the weather is hot and dry.
  • Established roses can be watered around once a week through spring and summer - more if the weather is hot.
  • For best results, feed roses in late-March/April and again in late July.
  • Before planting, plunge bare root plants into a bucket of water for half an hour to rehydrate.
  • To prune, just remove any dead, dying, damaged and diseased stems and also deadhead regularly.
  • Traditionally, you would cut just above a leaf joint with a sloping cut away from the bud, however, this isn't necessary, and don’t worry about pruning too much - roses are very resilient and will grow back.
