Product Information

Alliums are incredibly beautiful flowers. With their long, upright stems carrying huge globes made up of dozens of individual flowers, they have a spectacular architectural quality that’s impossible to miss and admired by all. Perfect for container growing, Allium ‘Ostara’ is a compact variety, but no less impressive. Its flowers are an amazingly vibrant purple-red during May and June and will look superb with the grey colour of the planter. Alliums are recommended by the RHS as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’ and bees, butterflies find the flowers irresistible.

The metal bucket planter contains everything you need to grow incredibly striking Alliums on a patio, balcony, or anywhere else. The rope handles and brushed white finish give it a great, rustic feel that will look fantastic in any style of garden, be it old fashioned and cottagey or bang up to date.

Simply plant the bulbs in autumn, up until mid-November, and they’ll Produce big, lush grey-green leaves in spring from which the flower stems will rise. As the planter is reusable, once the bulbs have died back you can plant the bucket with summer bedding, and the Alliums will return every spring, with more flowers year after year, and the flower stems look great dried, lasting for years.

Supplied as a metal planter with compost and 3 bulbs, growing to a height of up to 40 cm (16 in).

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Allium Bulbs

  • Plant bulbs at twice the depth of the height of the bulb and four times their width apart. e.g. 5cm tall bulbs need to be planted 10cm below the surface of the ground and 20cm apart.
  • They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they’ll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.
  • Leave them in the ground once they die back for flowers again next year.
  • While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.

Aftercare Advice

  • Plant Alliums as soon as possible in autumn so that they can establish a good root system before the weather becomes too cold.
  • Water frequently and ensure pots don’t dry out.

Cutting Back

  • The leaves of Alliums die back at flowering time and can be removed when this happens to keep them looking tidy.
