If you've only got room for one fruit tree, make it this one. Cherry 'Stella' is a fantastic all-rounder... Self-fertile, frost resistant, compact, and ideal for a big pot. Whether you're growing in a small garden or on a sunny patio, this is a tree that earns its keep.
From the third year onwards, you'll be harvesting up to 5kg of juicy, dark-skinned cherries from each tree, with no pollinator needed. 'Stella' is self-fertile, so it'll fruit even when growing solo. The cherries themselves are sweet, aromatic and plump, perfect for eating fresh off the tree or using in summer desserts.
In early March, just as winter's losing its grip, the branches are smothered in pink cherry blossom, delighting early bees and butterflies.
Unlike many cherries, it tolerates exposed spots and still crops reliably. And if you're limited on space, it grows happily in a pot, just make sure it gets plenty of sun and you'll be picking cherries in no time.
It's compact, productive and easy to manage with a light annual prune. Plus, the spring blossom gives it real ornamental value, even when the fruit's not yet arrived.
Best grown in moderately fertile soil in full sun.
If grown in pots keep well watered.
Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser such as 5-10-10 in early spring, about a month before flowering.
Prune young cherry trees during winter dormancy to shape them into an open center or central leader shape.
Mature trees will just need a simple prune to remove dead or crossing branches or to open up the center or maintain shape - unlike other fruit trees, “Stella” cherry trees do not need pruning to keep them fruiting.
Train fan-trained trees in spring. Prune established fans and carry out routine pruning on established cherry trees when harvesting the fruits in summer.
Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.
Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.
We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.
Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.
Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
