You have had avocado on toast. Now try growing the famous Avocado Tree 'Hass' for yourself!
In fact, this is the most popular variety for home-grown avocados, with the fruits loved for their rich, creamy flesh and distinctive bumpy skin that darkens as the fruit ripens on the plant.
Better still, it starts life as a handsome evergreen feature, with dark, glossy leaves and a tidy trunk that look superb in a bright room, conservatory, greenhouse or sheltered summer patio.
Even before fruit appears, 'Hass' brings a lush, exotic look that makes it far more interesting than an ordinary foliage plant. Then, with the right warmth, humidity, light, space and patience, mature plants may go on to produce their own avocados from around 5-7 years in good conditions.
Grow it in a pot so it can move outside during the warmest months, then bring it under cover before the cold arrives. Give it bright conditions, regular watering in active growth and room to develop.

Top Tips
Humidity and light are important if you hope to produce any fruit. A large, humid greenhouse or warm conservatory may be your best option.
Care Information
Growing Advice for Avocado:
- Keep your Avocado tree potted, and grow in a bright, sunny position.
- The avocado dislikes soil that is either excessively wet or dry. Water freely in summer and allow the top 1cm or so to dry out before watering again.
- Water less frequently in winter and keep plants at around 13-18C.
- Feed with a general-purpose liquid houseplant feed every seven to ten days during the spring and summer and once every 2 months at other times.
Pruning Advice for Avocado:
- Plants may become lanky and may need pinching back from time to time.
- Plants which have grown too large will usually respond well to hard pruning.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
