Don't let your garden fall silent in late winter! When colour is scarce and borders look bare, this Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora, known as the Paperbush, steps in and completely changes the mood of your garden.
In late winter and early spring, before leaves appear, rounded clusters of creamy yellow tubular flowers open directly on the bare stems. The effect is striking. Even better, the blooms carry a gentle, spicy fragrance that drifts on cold air and makes you take notice.
Paperbush is still rarely grown, which means it delivers that wonderful moment when visitors ask what it is. It prefers cool, sheltered conditions and rewards that choice with reliable winter interest year after year.
Plant it near a path, doorway or patio where it can be enjoyed in winter, when gardens are usually ignored.
Top Tips
- Little maintenance is needed, only light pruning to remove diseased, damaged or crossing shoots in late winter or early spring.
- After pruning apply a layer of mulch around the base and feed with a general purpose fertiliser.
Care Information
- Dig a hole twice the width of the rootball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground.
- Place the plant into the hole, back-filling so that it is at the same depth as was in the pot. Fill around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly. Water well.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
