Product Information

A dramatic and evergreen plant that is sure to add that sought-after intrigue to more-or-less any garden.

Also known as a New Zealand Flax, ‘Black Velvet’ stays true to its name, with sword-like leaves that are as close to black as they come, arching gracefully from a central clump.

Phormiums are grown in gardens across the country for their memorable look, so why not join the wave of popularity?

Towards the tail end of summer, see spikes of tubular red blooms that add an extra layer of interest to this already outstanding plant.

What’s more, ‘Black Velvet’ is very versatile and can be used to add height to a sunny bed or border, or for a patio pot.

For best impact, consider planting this variety alongside low-growing flowers in vibrant shades, such as a buttery yellow.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting.

Top Tips

Grow in a silver-coloured container for the ultimate in contemporary planting.

Care Information

  • Plants dislike cold, damp soil, so are best planted in full sun in well-drained soil, such as in a gravel or Mediterranean-style garden.
  • Avoid planting in exposed places as wind and cold will cause die-back on the leaves and stems. If damage does occur after a harsh winter (colder than -10°C), plants can be trimmed to remove dead growth, otherwise they need no pruning.
  • In colder areas they need to be given some mulch or other protection around the base of the plant in winter.
  • Other than that, really easy!
