Commonly known as 'Smoke Bushes', these large, bushy shrubs boast delightful green foliage through spring and summer, darkening to seasonal shades of yellow, orange, and red when autumn rolls around.
However, it is the billowing plumes of pink flowers that erupt from the foliage that really demand attention, bringing a smattering of soft candy floss-like flowers that seem to effortlessly float above summertime beds and borders.
A real garden treat – the nectar-rich blooms are particularly loved by pollinators, drawing the eye of bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects.
Plant these unique bushes throughout the garden, as they are able to thrive whether in beds, borders, or pots, promoting excellent ground cover.

To encourage better leaves at the expense of flowers, cut back in late spring, although ensure that your cotinus is well established before hard pruning.
Care Information
Planting Advice for Cotinus:
- Best grown in well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade
- Water your potted plant well.
- Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
- Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
- Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
- Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
Aftercare advice for Cotinus:
- Water regularly until established.
- After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

- Cotinus is easy to maintain needing just an occasional light trim to encourage new growth.
