Description

What a cracker this lovely peony is, and a one off too. It's an Intersectional Peony, a hybrid between traditional perennial varieties and the tougher tree peony, combining beauty, colour and robustness into one. See beautiful lemon-yellow flowers with frilly, ruffled centres and unique magenta streaks at the petal base.

'Bartzella' forms a neat mound of deep-green foliage that acts as the perfect backdrop for giant flowers, this superb peony will flower its socks off through April and May, and even into June. What's more, the blooms carry a wonderful lemon-citrus scent.

Long lived and easy to grow, this fully hardy peony is especially vigorous with sturdy flower stems that don't require staking – making them exquisite cut flowers. Being a perennial, each autumn 'Bartzella' retreats underground, only to emerge bigger and more floriferous next year.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as a bare root plant, ready for potting up and growing on or planting straight out soil has warmed.

Top Tips
This is an intersectional peony, which is a cross between a woody-stemmed tree peony and an herbaceous peony that dies back in autumn. The woody growth can be cut back during the winter down to 5-8cm (2-3in).
Care Information
  • Peony ‘Bartzilla’ requires a sunny or partial shade in well-drained soil. Plant so that the roots are covered up to where the branching begins. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may encourage rot.
  • When planting, dig a hole twice the width of root and deep enough to accommodate the root plus 2.5 – 5 cm (1 to 2in) of any stem.
  • Because plants are grown on their own root stock and are not grafted, any new growth from below soil will bloom true.
  • After the first heavy frost, cut plants back to (5-8cm) 2-3in above the ground. You can also wait until early spring if you prefer.
  • If you must plant in a pot, use a container that’s a minimum of 18in wide and deep and that has excellent drainage. Use a mix of 2/3 potting compost and 1/3 perlite to improve drainage. Do not overwater – allow plants to dry out a bit between waterings. Place the pot where it will get morning sun or dappled sun all day.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
