Description

Extraordinary! Imagine stepping into your garden and seeing clouds of tiny white flowers, dancing lightly in the summer breeze. That's the astonishing impact Gypsophila, or 'Baby's Breath', brings. It's incredibly popular amongst florists too, and looks tremendous in a vase!

This is not just another perennial. This is a real cottage garden classic, a plant that creates an ethereal, cloud-like veil of flowers, unlike anything else you can grow. From midsummer, each bare root bursts into life, smothering airy stems with hundreds upon hundreds of delicate blossoms. The effect is breathtaking, like a shimmering haze that softens borders, lifts arrangements, and adds a touch of romance to every corner of the garden.

Why should you grow it? Because little else can match the angelic beauty of Gypsophila. It's hardy, easy, reliable, and once planted it comes back every year. It shrugs off dry spells, needs little attention, and rewards you with displays that are astonishingly generous. Bees and butterflies adore it too, as an RHS recommended 'Plant for Pollinators', making it as good for wildlife as it is for your eyes.

Create drifts of these airy white blooms, weaving through roses, salvias, or lavenders for a timeless cottage feel. Or dedicate a cutting patch and snip stems for vases indoors. Many brides even include 'Baby's Breath' in their wedding day bouquets.

Supplied as a set of 10 bare root plants, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Plant your Gypsophila in drifts or groups of three or more for the most spectacular cloud effect. The more you plant together, the stronger the billowing haze of white flowers looks, especially alongside roses or lavender.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Open the package straight away and unwrap the bare roots.
  • Check the roots are firm and healthy. If they look a little dry after transit, soak them in a bucket of lukewarm water for a couple of hours to rehydrate before planting.
  • If you can’t plant immediately, keep the roots in a cool, frost-free place, loosely wrapped in damp newspaper or compost to stop them drying out.

How To Plant

  • Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. Gypsophila hates sitting in soggy conditions. A raised bed or sandy soil is ideal.
  • Prepare the ground by removing weeds and working in some coarse grit or sand if your soil is heavy.
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots. Set each root crown so it sits just below soil level.
  • Space plants 30-40cm apart to allow their airy sprays of flowers room to spread.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well.

Ongoing Care

  • Water regularly while plants are establishing in their first season. Once established, Gypsophila is drought tolerant and only needs water in prolonged dry spells.
  • After the first main flush of flowers, cut the stems back by half to encourage a second round of blooms later in the season. At the end of autumn, cut stems down to ground level.
  • Gypsophila is fully hardy in UK gardens so winter should not be an issue. Protect young plants in very wet soils by ensuring good drainage over winter.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
