Description

A Big Step Forward For Hosta Breeding! 'Red Ninja' Breaks Away From The Familiar Greens, Blues And Golds With Lasting, Deeply Flushed Red Foliage, And Has Already Been Crowned RHS Chelsea Plant Of The Year 2026!

'Red Ninja' is the revolutionary new hosta, and is a genuine colour breakthrough, introducing deeply flushed purple-red leaves with contrasting green margins and vivid red stems.

Earlier hostas may have hinted at red when their foliage first emerged, only for those tones to disappear as the season progressed. But, the rich 'Red Ninja' colouring develops with the spring growth and remains a powerful feature deep into summer.

Position it where it receives gentle morning sun, partial sun or bright dappled light and the central red tones become richer and more dramatic. Keep the soil moist, particularly in sunnier positions, and this compact plant will steadily form a striking mound around 35cm tall.

Purple flowers rise above the leaves from late summer into early autumn, extending the display just as many other shade plants begin to lose momentum. Fully hardy and low maintenance once established, it works beautifully as groundcover, along the front of a border or as an award-winning feature in a patio pot.

Supplied as one bare root plant, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Planting Depth: Plant with crown just below soil level, Planting Spacing: 45-60cm apart.

  • For best effect, plant where your hostas receive full sun for at least half of the day, but protect from midday sun. This will encourage the best leaf colour.
Care Information
  • Before planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter into the soil. Hostas prefer a rich, moisture retentive soil.
  • Create a hole just deep and wide enough for the roots. The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Keep plants well-watered and mulched with well-rotted organic matter.
  • Hostas can be grown in any container in a good, multi-purpose compost. Ensure that they are kept well-watered. Pot-grown hostas should be fed monthly with a general-purpose liquid feed.
  • Protect from slugs and snails.
  • If you find that your hosta is suffering from scorched leaves, move it to a shadier, more sheltered position.
  • Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
