Description

Introducing a perennial that turns up the heat in your garden. Kniphofia 'Flamenco', also known as Red Hot Poker, is a compact, hardy variety that delivers an explosion of fiery colour for months on end. From June to October, it sends up a succession of vibrant flower spikes in glowing shades of yellow, orange and red, like rockets bursting skyward from the neat clump of grass-like leaves below.

'Flamenco' has been bred with tidy, strap-shaped foliage that keeps its form beautifully, even after months of flowering. Its dwarf habit means it fits perfectly into smaller borders, mixed planting schemes, or patio pots, while still packing a visual punch.

Once planted, it's refreshingly low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, making it a perfect choice for city and coastal gardens, gravel gardens, wildlife borders and cottage-style displays. Its long flowering season bridges the gap when many other plants start to fade, ensuring your garden stays alive with colour and interest well into autumn.

The blooms aren't just for show, they're rich in nectar, making them a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. And if you enjoy cut flowers, these striking spears add a dramatic flourish to arrangements indoors.

Top Tips
When planting, do not bury the crown of the plant any deeper than 7.5cm.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Kniphofia Flamenco:

  • Best grown in a well-drained, but not over-fertile soil, plants bloom best in full sun.
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Mulch young plants with straw or leaves or cover with fleece for their first winter.
  • Water container-grown plants regularly over the summer. Apply a light fertiliser in spring or early summer.

Pruning Advice:

  • Deadhead after flowering. Leave the old foliage on the plant to protect the crown over winter. Tidy plants in spring by pulling away dead and damaged leaves from the base, which will also allow you to check for slugs and snails.
