Description
For years, gardeners have loved the structure and style that traditional box hedging brings to a garden, but they dread the diseases and pests that come with it. Fear no more, as Ilex crenata, a Japanese Holly, is the blight, rust and caterpillar resistant alternative shrub to box.
'Luxus' is a recent variety with compact growth of up to 60cm. The foliage of small, glossy leaves is almost identical to Buxus, yet it's naturally robust and low maintenance.
This is a great choice for low hedging, defining garden borders, edging pathways or adding structure to your planting - break up your kitchen garden from your mixed borders with a row of Ilex crenata 'Luxus'! It grows slowly and evenly, ideal for creating neat, clipped lines or topiary shapes that stay in trim with very little effort.
Fully hardy and evergreen, 'Luxus' will look good in your garden all year round, with foliage that matures from pale green to rich, dark tones. In spring, tiny white flowers can appear.

Care Information
- Individual specimen plants require minimal pruning, just removing dead or damaged branches in spring.
- Topiary needs a minimum once-a-year trim in early summer to keep them neatly shaped, although bushes do much better clipped twice - in May and September.
- Formal hedges can be trimmed in late summer and a 5-6cm mulch of well-rotted compost or manure added around the base of the plants.
- Ilex crenata grows well in pots, but care must be taken to prevent the roots from freezing. Place them in a sheltered spot during severe weather.
- Feed with a slow-release plant food to keep the foliage healthy.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.
