Description

'Compact Silver' is a superb selection of the ever-popular Eucalyptus, chosen for gardeners who want that iconic silver-blue foliage and fresh aromatic scent without the towering, unruly growth of many traditional gum trees.

This variety is naturally compact, bushy and far easier to manage, making it a brilliant choice for modern gardens, smaller spaces, patios and large containers. Its blue-grey evergreen leaves hold their colour beautifully through the year, for texture and cool-toned contrast even when much of the garden is asleep.

Like all good Eucalyptus, 'Compact Silver' releases that clean, refreshing fragrance when the foliage is brushed or cut. The long-lasting stems are also excellent for floral arrangements, home-grown bouquets and indoor decoration.

Grow it as a striking specimen, keep it clipped in a large pot, use it for architectural structure in a border, or trim it to form a wonderfully fragrant hedge. A couple of trims each year will help keep the shape neat and compact.

Top Tips

Leaves are the best shape on young stems. In order to keep the rounded leaves, trees can be cut back to a low framework.

Leave plants to establish for a couple of years before starting hard pruning.

Care Information
  • Plants are best grown in full sun with shelter from strong winds when they are young.
  • Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.
  • Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting, and mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the plant is in place.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain. Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot, then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball. Water well.

Pruning:

  • In the second or third spring, cut back to 60-90cm from the ground for pollards or 5-7.5cm for coppiced plants.
  • Pinch sideshoots to encourage further branching.
  • In subsequent years, cut back annually or every few years to the previous stubs.
  • Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser each spring.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
