Description

Fast-growing native shrubs, excellent for hedging with spring flowers and bird-feeding fruits and seeds... And just wait for the autumnal transformation of colour, with attractive pink and red tones.

Dark green pointed leaves stretch across these upright deciduous hedging plants, also known as Euonymus europaeus. See a scattering of dainty white flowers in spring.

Entering autumn, the foliage transforms to a glowing seasonal shade of red, a characteristic that makes this variety so widely grown and appreciated, while the flowers are followed by four-lobed red fruits which split open to reveal orange seeds.

The fruit and seeds are not edible for humans but are greatly appreciated by the birdlife of your garden. The blooms are rich in nectar, drawing the attention of beneficial insects, having even been recommended by the RHS as 'Plants for Pollinators'.

Hardy and easy to grow, these hedges thrive in full sun or partial shade, growing at a fast approximate rate of 45cm each year, up to a mature height of around 3m.

Supplied as a set of 12 established plants, each approximately 40-60cm tall, in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
This variety can draw the attention of aphids, so try not to plant near pots with vegetables growing.
Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Grow in full sun or partial shade, whether exposed or sheltered.
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of existing roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole, whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed, in a process called backfilling.
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish.
  • Hardy in winter conditions down to -15C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.

Pruning Advice:

  • Hedges may be trimmed in spring or autumn to keep them tidy and shapely, if pruning at the end of the season (when growth has finished), do it before the onset of very cold weather.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
