Product Information

A hybrid series of 'Red Hot Pokers'... A floral dream with spectacular spikes of blooms produced continuously for months.

These fully hardy perennials put on a show of bright erupting flowers from a base of compact, grass-like leaves to fill any garden with colour, including outstanding shades like cream and orange, red, and mango.

Bring a spark of light to your garden, just when other varieties are starting to tire, with these dwarf pokers, which are ideal for potted planting, or for placing in smaller gardens.

Easy to grow and terrific drought-tolerant garden plants, these are excellent additions to city and coastal gardens and look great in the middle of wildlife borders and gravel gardens - as well as traditional cottage-garden style planting.

Unlike other varieties, the ‘Popsicle’ series has delightful grassy foliage that remains tidy so not to spoil the overall display - you don't even need to worry about staking thanks to a dwarf nature. For best results, plant in borders, pots, and containers.

Adored by butterflies and bees for their nectar, and flower arrangers for their style, Red Hot Pokers make lovely cut flowers too.

Supplied as three established plants in 9cm pots ready for planting out. Including one each of:

  • Orange Popsicle – Spikes of sweet, cream and orange blooms emerge from a tight clump of foliage.
  • Papaya Popsicle – Produces a sea of sweet, orange, and red flowers.
  • Mango Popsicle – Orange mango blooms erupt continuously for months.

Top Tips

Incorporate horticultural grit to the planting hole if your soil is heavy clay, to open it up and improve drainage.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Best grown in a well-drained, but not over-fertile soil, plants bloom best in full sun.
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Mulch young plants with straw or leaves or cover with fleece for their first winter.
  • Taking Care of Kniphofia.
  • Water container-grown plants regularly over the summer. Apply a light fertilizer in spring or early summer.

Pruning Advice:

  • Deadhead after flowering. Leave the old foliage on the plant to protect the crown over winter. Tidy plants in spring by pulling away dead and damaged leaves from the base, which will also allow you to check for slugs and snails.
