Product Information

Enjoy garden interest in abundance with this hardy and reliable hedge, which features shows of fragrant white flowers, luscious light green leaves, and inky black berries.

Also known as Hagberry, this variety is often grown as a tree, but will also make outstanding structural hedgerows.

Beauty starts in spring, when white flowers erupt on short spikes with an attractive almond-like perfume. Moving into autumn, dark fruits develop along eye-catching red stems.

What’s more, this hedge is recommended by the RHS as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’, thanks to the nectar-rich flowers that draw the attention of bees with early-season pollen, while birds and smaller garden mammals love the sweet autumn berries.

Bird Cherry hedges grow well in most soil types, in either full sun or partial shade, but will not tolerate exposed windy sites, coastal conditions, or fully shaded areas.

Growing at a rate of 20-40cm per year, it is easy to keep this hedge well-shaped and uniform, particularly when attempting to reach a manageable height of 4m.

Don’t forget to use one of our handy bamboo cane and spiral guard sets when planting a bare root hedge. The cane will keep the bare root upright as it grows, while the spiral guard will protect the base of the plant from wildlife to achieve as thick a hedge as possible.

Supplied as a bare root hedge, 60-90cm tall, ready for planting.

Top Tips

For best performance, plant bare root hedges in the winter.

Care Information

On Arrival:

  • When your bare root hedges arrive, be sure to place them upright in a bucket of clean water as soon as possible for a minimum of two hours.
  • Only remove the plants from the water when you go to plant them, to ensure the roots are wet when planted and avoiding the chance of them drying out.
  • If you are not ready to immediately plant your bare roots when they arrive, they can be stored in a sheltered space, such as a shed, for up to a week. Just be sure to open the package they arrive in and keep the roots moist.

Planting:

  • Where possible, plant in well-drained, good-quality soil in a sunny or partially shaded space in the garden for best performance.
  • Trim the roots slightly before planting, as this will encourage healthier growth.
  • Dig a trenched hole in the ground in the shape of a ‘V’, deep enough for the bare root to sit comfortably so the ‘tide mark’ of the root is level with the ground. This marks the level where the bare root was previously planted before lifting for delivery.
  • Ensure the roots are completely covered in soil, then firm the soil around, as water will gather in any remaining air pockets and potentially damage the roots when it freezes.
  • Water immediately after planting, then again whenever there are three or more days of continuous dry weather.
  • Where the weather is hot, daily watering may be needed throughout the first year of growth.
  • For an impressive display when planting multiple hedges, place five per metre. For a thicker hedge, plant seven per metre.
