Product Information

‘Madonna’ is an extremely popular variety of aubergine, bearing particularly tasty, long oval fruits with wonderfully deep purple, glossy skins all summer from July.

As a grafted aubergine that begins to ripen early, ‘Madonna’ crops heavily and continuously throughout the season whether grown in a greenhouse of a large patio pot. One of the main benefits of grafting is that the plants produce heavier crops over a longer period and have excellent resistance to pests and diseases, making them easy to grow and reliable performers.

‘Madonna’ will thrive in a greenhouse or on the patio in a warm and sheltered spot with regular watering and feeding. You’ll be rewarded with a delicious harvest of aubergines that taste great when fried, grilled or baked and are a rich source of B vitamins and potassium as well as minerals and fibre.

Supplied as 3 established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant when the last chance of frost has passed, growing to a height of 70cm (2½ft) and spread of 60cm (2ft).

Care Information

Growing aubergines

  • Aubergines are tender plants and won’t survive frosts, so don’t plant them outside until the risk of frost is passed.
  • Plant in a greenhouse, and if planting outdoors choose a sheltered spot in full sun.
  • Warm the soil outdoors by covering with polythene or cloches for two weeks before panting.
  • Plant 60cm (2ft) apart and cover with fleece or cloches for 2-3 weeks until they establish.
  • The plants will need staking as they grow and become heavy with fruit.
  • Water regularly and feed with a high potassium fertiliser every two weeks once the fruit begins to form.

Harvest

  • Remove ripe fruit from July onwards by cutting with a knife or secateurs when they are evenly coloured and glossy. If they start to become dull they will taste bitter.
