Many Mediterranean trees and shrubs adapt surprisingly well to the UK climate, especially when planted in south-facing borders, gravel gardens and warm patios. Hardy varieties such as olive trees, Trachycarpus palms, bamboos and rosemary can stay outdoors all year in most of the country and weather conditions, while some species like bougainvillea, oleander or citrus trees appreciate a bit of winter protection, either in a sheltered spot, conservatory or a greenhouse - or even a fleece wrap during cold snaps. Just be sure to return them to their sun-soaked garden spot from spring onwards.
Most Mediterranean plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil. The main issue Mediterranean varieties face in winter is waterlogging, so if you have heavy clay soil, consider adding grit or plant in containers with good drainage holes and free-draining compost. Olive trees and hardy palms cope well with winter wet, but citrus varieties are best protected from prolonged frost: a sheltered, south-facing position will encourage the best growth, fruiting and fragrance.
Bear in mind that citrus and container palms will appreciate regular feeding through spring and summer. Light pruning will keep plants neat and promote fresh shoots, while bamboos benefit from a more thorough annual tidy to remove older, sometimes discoloured stems.
A Mediterranean garden is all about relaxed structure, scented foliage and warm colour. Evergreens like olive trees, palms and bays make strong focal points, while herbs such as thyme, rosemary and lavender fill gaps with fragrance and help attract pollinators. Gravel mulch, terracotta pots and pale paving all help keep roots dry and reflect the heat, creating the warm conditions these plants love.
Citrus trees in large pots are perfect for patios, where you can enjoy the scent of their spring blossom and summer fruit. For a more tropical look, add banana plants for bold leaves throughout the summer, and bamboo for height and movement - you are sure to love the sound of the rattling canes in the wind. If you have a small space, try grouping containers together to create a sun-drenched corner.
